The Lone Star Writing Project Would you want to take flying lessons from a non-pilot? Neither would we. Likewise, do students want to take "writing lessons" from teachers who can't--or don't--write? At the Lone Star Writing Project (LSWP), we believe that teachers of writing must be writers themselves. Thus, within our training, we free teachers to become writers. Then, and only then, we show them how to teach writing. Writing is a craft--not merely a talent. That's good news, because it means that all teachers, and their students, can become good writers. The LSWP focuses on craft lessons that build crucial writing skills. Writing takes place throughout the school day--not just in language arts or English classes. The LSWP focuses on writing in the content areas--whether it be science or math or social studies. In fact, the process of writing is one of the greatest tools available for coming to understand academic content. It's important that students receive a consistent message about writing. One of the major goals of the LSWP is to bring uniform procedures to drafting, editing, and revision throughout the school grades and content areas. So how do we achieve these goals? We begin with an intensive one week, 40 hour experience where the entire campus or district comes together for training. During this training, teachers learn about the writing process through writing. We follow this with 40 more hours that allow our staff to track teacher progress as the LSWP is implemented in the school. These follow up sessions are scheduled based upon your district's calendar. Come expecting to learn--but to have fun, too. You'll build rapport with fellow teachers and campus or district personnel. You'll be freed from your fears of writing, and leave as a confident teacher of writing. Your students, and their parents, will be glad that you are LSWP trained.
